Hoy es día 8-8-08, el numero "8" es considerado un numero de buena suerte en varios paises, especialmente en la China, el cual en Mandarín se denomina "ba" y en Cantonés "paat" y es muy similar en sonido a la palabra "fa" 法 en Mandarín y "faat" en Cantones que significa "prosperidad".
Es increíble el poder que tiene la superstición, parece que en la China se paga mucho mas por tener el número 8 entre los números del teléfono o celulares, tambien se paga un buen precio por tener el número 8 en la placa del auto o carro, hasata leí que una aerolínea China (no mencionan el nombre) pago en el 2003 $300,000 para tener todos los números 8s en su línea telefónica de venta. Hoy también parece fue un día record en bodas... muchos deseaban casarse a las 8:08 de la mañana, pero por la mucha cantidad de parejas que tomaron esa misma hora, tuvieron que conformarse en tomar otra hora para su casamiento… y por supuesto hoy comenzaron las Olimpiadas en Beijing a las 8:08 PM de la China... Una de las características del numero 8 en ser tan deseado,es por su perfecta simetría, alcanzando así un balance perfecto. En la Astrología China, tener el balance perfecto es considerado el estado ideal del universo. Por otra parte el número ocho es el símbolo del infinito.
Mi primer nombre de pila está formado por 8 letras y creo que quienes son supersticiosos estarían muy contentos con tener mi número de teléfono, pues entre los numeros tiene un 8... Jajá
Hablando de supersticiones, cuando recién llegue como estudiante a los EEUU mis tíos vivían en un condominio y cuando los visitaba me pareció extraño que el ascensor no tuviera el numero 13, según mi tía me explico, por ser el numero 13 un numero de mala suerte, ningún edificio tenia piso numero 13, jajá forma de mentirse a uno mismo, que no tenga un numero 13 escrito no deja de ser que el piso 14 se encuentre sobre el 12 y contarse como el numero 13.

Por cierto esa historia del edificio me recuerda otra historia que mi madre me conto de cuando ella era niña y vivia la guerra civil en España, el numero que tenia su casa era el 13 y las casas que habiam en ambos lados de la suya fueron bombardeadas, menos su casa con el 13. Por eso creo que si uno sigue las supersticiones de los números para poderse moverse en la vida, sería algo como para volver a uno loco.
Si nos olvidamos de que si un número es de fortuna o no... se puede decir que el día de hoy con varios 8 fue especial a la vista, como el año pasado fue el 7-7-07 y los años anteriores con números repetidos... y por supuesto este día será muy recordado por la alegría que trajo la apertura de las olimpiadas.

Today there appears to have been a record number of wedding celebrations with many couples wanting to be married at 8:08 in the morning, but, because of the big quantity, many had to select another time. The Olympics, however, opened at 8:08 PM in China.
The perfect symmetry of the number 8, its perfect balance, is responsible for its desirability. In Chinese astrology perfect balance is considered the ideal state of the universe. The number 8 is also the symbol of infinity.

Talking about superstition, when I arrived to the USA as a student my aunt and uncle were living in a condominium and I found it very strange not to find the number 13 in the elevator. My aunt explains to me that the number 13 is considered bad luck, therefore, no building had a designated 13th floor...ha-ha. What a way to lie to oneself: The 13th floor by any other name is still the 13th floor. The floor after the twelfth doesn't really become the 14th floor.
This discussion reminds me of one of the stories told to me by my mother. When she was a child living in Spain at the time of the civil war, the number of her house was 13. Bombs hit the homes on both sides of her home; they didn't, however, fall upon number 13.
I believe that if one follows the superstition of allowing magic numbers to guide oneself through life, one is likely to go crazy.
Nonetheless, today's date is special to the eyes because of all the number 8's, just as last year 7-7-07 was an interesting date, and similarly all the years before also bearing repetitive numbers. Today will be very much remembered because of the happiness that the Olympics bring to many people.
